The Book Thief: A Journey to Forbidden Knowledge

Starring: Emily Watson, Geoffrey Rush, Nico Liersch, Ben Schnetzer, Sophie Nelisse
Genre: Drama/ Historical Fiction
Duration: 131 minutes

Release Date: 8 November, 2013
The movie, The Book Thief, based on Markus Zusak's best-selling novel is directed by Brian Percival. The story revolves around a young girl named Liesel (Sophie Nelisse) - a victim of World War II- who finds solace in reading books in the basement of her adoptive parents' house. At a very young age, her reading habit enables her to see and hear the untold but lived stories existing in the society.
Set in a small village in Germany, the story begins with a narration by Death followed by death of Liesel's brother. Thereafter she is sent to her adoptive parents where she encounters different extreme situations. Loss of her parents and loss of her freedom don't stop her from learning how to read and write. Despite being under constant surveillance, she manages to steal and read the forbidden books. Her intellectual maturity eases her difficult psychological journey only to prepare her for the future which she is unaware of.
The film presents very realistic images of war with the portrayal of cold weather, poverty, harsh words of Rosa (Emily Watson), cruelty of officers, and most importantly the children's desire to be children before they become adults. The use of silent moments to make the audience feel the situations is outstanding. In addition, Liesel's acting is highly fascinating. Her controlled yet innocent expressions leave lingering effect on the audience.
The movie is captivating enough to immerse you in it. If you are someone who likes to explore the untold things in the movie, The Book Thief is for you.

How to Use These Writing Formats Effectively
Mastering various writing formats is essential for academic success, especially for NEB Class 11 and 12 students in Nepal. Each format serves a specific purpose and follows distinct conventions that help convey your message effectively to the intended audience.
Email Writing requires a professional tone, clear subject line, and concise body text. Always include a proper greeting and closing with your contact information. For formal emails to teachers or institutions, maintain a respectful tone throughout.
Essay Writing follows a structured format with introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The introduction should present your thesis statement, body paragraphs should provide evidence and analysis, and the conclusion should summarize main points and restate the thesis in new words.
Press Releases follow the inverted pyramid structure - most important information first, followed by supporting details. Include a compelling headline, dateline, lead paragraph answering the 5 Ws (Who, What, When, Where, Why), quotes from key people, and boilerplate information about your organization.
For NEB examinations, understanding these formats can significantly improve your scores. Practice each format regularly, paying attention to specific requirements like word count, tone, and structural elements. Review model answers and seek feedback from teachers to refine your skills.
Remember that effective writing is not just about following formats but also about clear communication, logical organization of ideas, and appropriate language use for your audience.
